Free Lodging This Weekend

To all of my coupon-ing friends out there, you will be proud of us this weekend. We have searched high and low for a place to go this weekend. We just need a place to sleep and chill out with no cell phones and no real distractions. Upward Baseball/Softball season is over and we need to catch up on our sleep and spend a little un-distracted quality time together. Since it's Memorial Day Weekend, everywhere we looked was booked solid or only had the most expensive rooms available. So, I called my Dad. :-) He and his family (he remarried and she has kids) are headed out of town to an archery contest of some sort so the house....and the pool (woohoo) will be empty for the weekend!!! The house is centrally located between Athens (my FAVORITE town in all the world) and Madison (one of my top 10 favorite towns). We were married at a wonderful, beautiful church in Madison so going back always brings fond memories.

Anywho, we will have free lodging for the weekend and only have to pay for food and gas. Not a bad way to travel if you ask me. Thanks Dad for letting us stay while you and the family are away! :-)

Question From A Reader

After I posted my trip to Publix I was asked a great question: "Publix takes Rite Aid coupons?"

The answer is "It depends." :-) Not the answer you were looking for was it? I will clarify.

In my opinion, Publix has one of the best coupon policies out there. Not only do they accept manufacturer coupons and their own coupons but they accept competitor coupons as well. Down here in Middle Georgia there are 3 Publix stores in a 20 mile radius. On the north side of town there is a Target and a Rite Aid so the Publix closest to both of those stores accepts Rite Aid and Target coupons because they are competitors. There is a Publix on the south side of town and they do not accept Target or Rite Aid coupons. My cousin lives in north Macon and her closest Publix no longer accepts Rite Aid coupons and my only explanation is there must be a Publix store closer to the Rite Aid in Macon. Each Publix store management has leeway in determining who is and who is not their competitor. If you have a Publix close to a Food Lion or Harveys then you may use their store coupons at that Publix. If your Publix is close to a Whole Foods then you can probably use their store coupons at the closest Publix. So, as you can see, each Publix will have their own list of competitors. If you do not know who your Publix considers to be a competitor, then ask! The cashiers, customer service desk, and management will be happy to tell you. The staff at my Publix is, for the most part, very helpful and friendly!

Old Navy Coupon

There is an Old Navy ad in the Macon Telegraph today with a $5/$25 purchase that is valid from 5/21 through 6/3. The ad has a picture of some cute totes that are $12 each and if we had kids I would probably pick up a few things for them from there. Rarely do I see something I want or need to wear there but I do buy their 4th of July t-shirts...sometimes. :-) So, if Old Navy is your store of choice then don't forget to take the coupon with you when you go shopping!

Starbucks Caramel Coffee

This is the bag of coffee that Starbucks and All You Magazine sent me to try out. I was presented with a choice of flavors and chose the caramel. They infused caramel into the ground coffee. You can tell there is a little bit of difference when you go to scoop the coffee into your coffee maker. It is a little bit shiney and it is kind of sticky but neither posed a problem. I just noticed the difference in texture when I opened the bag so I thought I would share. I couldn't stand it and had to brew a cup the day I got it. :-)

Here's the deal: I don't drink coffee black. Ever. For any reason. I did take a sip of this coffee before adding creamer and sugar to it and it was BITTER. So, if you like your coffee black then this review is not for you. I smelled the grounds before putting them in the coffee maker and could just make out a hint of caramel in the aroma. Once it was brewed I still only smelled a hint of the caramel and when I tasted it before adding any creamer or sugar, I couldn't taste the caramel at all. Once I added Nestle CoffeeMate Original liquid creamer and enough sugar to take the bitter edge off, I was in coffee heaven! I absolutely, positively enjoyed both ways I made the coffee. At first, I tried it hot/warm just the way I typically drink coffee and it was wonderful. I could taste the caramel in that wonderful cup of java. It smelled like I had just walked into Starbucks! The flavor is full and rich, just what you would expect from Starbucks coffee. The addition of the caramel might make you think "sickeningly sweet" but it was far from that. It had just enough caramel in it to flavor the coffee but not enough to overwhelm it to the point where it tastes like a cup of caramel instead of coffee.

Next, I poured a little of it over ice to taste it that way. I have noticed that some coffees do not taste as wonderful once they have been poured over ice and wondered if that would happen with this one. I was thrilled with the flavor even over ice! I think that I enjoyed it more as iced coffee than I did hot/warm. That may have to do with the fact that it was 80+ degrees down here in Middle Georgia or I just like caramel coffee over ice.

Here's another disclaimer: when I drink regular coffee I use Nestle CoffeMate Vanilla Caramel liquid creamer. So, I already enjoy caramel flavoring in coffee.

So, the question is: would I recommend Starbucks Natural Fusion Caramel flavored coffee that can be brewed at home? The answer is emphatically YES. It was delicious! If you have an opportunity to give this coffee a try then I recommend that you do.

My CVS Deal

I headed out to CVS today, thanks to my sister's unexpected coupon treasures that I received in the mail today. I picked up 6 Dawn with Olay 9.5 oz bottles and 6 boxes of Puffs Plus. The sale at CVS is buy 12 for $10. I had 4-$1 off Dawn with Olay Qs from the Home Made Simple coupon booklets and 2-.50 off Dawn with Olay Qs. I also had 1-$1 off Puffs and 6-.50 off Puffs from Vocal Point. I paid $2.20 (this includes tax) for all 12 items. If I had a couple more of the $1 off Dawn with Olay Qs, I would have made out like a bandit! I would have owed nothing but tax. :-) This deal is good until Sunday. Even if you don't have the coupons .83 for a box of Puffs Plus is a good deal. Also, the Dawn with Olay is .83 each and if you have the .50 off coupons from one of the inserts then that makes it a better deal.

Mail Call~Great Day!!!

Man, today is getting better and better. The only thing that would make it better is if my hubby was able to stay home with me instead of going to work.

My sister, who lives in the Atlanta area, mailed me a treasure trove of coupons that she won't use. I am going through them now to see if I can head to the store and cash in on a deal.

My hubby and I got our Prepair Crocs that are normally $39.99 each for $14.99 each and no shipping! I'm walking around the house in mine now. I bought the pink and silver pair and they look nice. The hubby got navy and silver and I think he will enjoy them. He will be taking his to the Ukraine with him to use as shower shoes.

Finally, I just got a full size bag of Starbucks coffee to try out and tell you, my wonderful readers, all about. Starbucks is trying something called "Starbucks Natural Fusions" and I chose the caramel flavored coffee to taste. I might just go brew some right now! I thought that caramel would make a wonderful flavor for iced coffee since it is the summer time. By the way: neither Starbucks nor All You (the magazine is who sent it to me to try) will be paying me for my opinion. Even if they were I would still tell you what I honestly think about it. It smells wonderful! I've always enjoyed the smell of coffee even if I'm not a big fan of drinking it (I do like coffee but I usually put tons of creamer and sugar in it).

Now, if I could just get a good deal on Dawn and Puffs at CVS, that would be the icing on the cake today!

Praising The Lord!!!

Wow. That is all I can say right now. Wow. God is so good!

As you all know we are saving and saving and saving to go on a trip to Israel and Jordan in October. You also know that originally we had planned on going for our 10 year anniversary in 2012 until Dr. Jimmy DeYoung announced that he was taking a group from our church. That moved our trip up 2 years and reduced our time to save DRASTICALLY. We took the matter to the Lord in prayer and stepped out in faith that we would have the trip paid for BEFORE we left the Atlanta airport. We didn't know exactly how much it would cost when we started saving but we set a goal of $10,000. Now we know that it will cost over $10,000. It's going to be closer to $13,000 if we want to take any spending money with us for souveniers and the like. Thankfully the travel company (Joshua Travel) includes tips and 2 meals a day in the price of the trip. Bubba and I will be responsible for getting to New York City and then back to Atlanta from New York City after our trip. That is where part of the extra expense will come in. So, why am I "wow"?!?

We have already sent in our deposit and the rest of the money is due by the beginning of August. It is the end of May and we have saved over $9,000!!! Unbelievable. I honestly didn't know if we could do it. I mean, we are putting a HUGE chunk of our income into savings every pay period. This is the part that blows my mind: as much as we are saving, we haven't stopped tithing, giving, grocery shopping, or setting aside money for essentials (oil changes, gas, monthly bills, car insurance, clothing, etc.). We set our budget, tightened our belts, gave up our monthly camping trips, and reduced our "out to eat" fund, among other things. I am blown away!

I've listened to Dave Ramsey for several years now. We used his steps to set a budget and get on track with our retirement. I would always marvel at folks who would call into his show and say they paid off thousands and thousands in debt in a year or 2 or 3. Then they would say they did it with 4 kids and the husband's take home pay was $50,000 or something like that. I'll be absolutely transparent here: if we had car payments or credit card payments or college loan payments, we would NOT be able to do what we are doing. God's Word is CLEAR when it comes to debt: The borrower is slave to the lender (Proverbs 22:7). Are you making payments to everyone and their mother? Do you have more month than money? You DON'T have to live that way, you CAN see the light at the end of the tunnel. I've told y'all before and I'll say it again: Dave Ramsey's plan is plain and simple and easy to follow if you are serious about getting your financial situation under control. Go to his website, check out his books from the library. I would start with this one:

You too can stand in awe at God's goodness and see His Hand on your life when you look at your finances. You are choosing to stay where you are. I thank God that Bubba and I got sick and tired of our financial mess, found Dave Ramsey, followed his simple plan, and finally honored God with our money!

I'm Back!

Good afternoon y'all! Sorry I've been absent for the past couple of days. I actually had to work yesterday and I've been a little under the weather here and there. Today I stopped by a few stores and scored some great stuff! I'll just share the highlights. :-)

At CVS in the clearance section they had Playtex Gentle Glide tampons 18 count marked down to $1.32. I had $1 off coupons so I picked up 5 boxes ($6.60) used 5 coupons ($1.60) and 1-$1 ECB bringing the total down to .60 before taxes. The total with taxes was .99, I would call that a successful trip. I paid .99 for 5 boxes of name brand tampons. :-) Lovin' it!

I shopped around Target today just to see what was on clearance and hoping to use my $3 off Merona dress, $2 off Merona shoes, or $2 off Merona scarf or belt coupons that I printed from the Target website. I found one dress marked down to $9 and change so with my $3 off coupon making it around $6. It's an adorable dress, all white with big, soft purple flowers on it. I also noticed a whole end-cap full of Pantene products. I was not impressed with the prices and will check again in the next couple of days to see if they come down further. However I did pick up on bottle of Curls Spray Gel (I have naturally curly hair) for $1.63. I had a $1 off Pantene style product coupon so I got it for .63. I am unfamiliar with this product so .63 to give it a try is definitely in my budget.

The final "big deal" that I picked up today has me smiling from ear to ear! I was searching my Kroger for the Stacy's Pita Chips when I saw the "manager's special" sticker on Organic, Cage Free, Large brown eggs. A dozen is normally $4.99 but I picked up 2 dozen for $1.29 each. I heart brown eggs and am tickled pink to get to have a couple dozen organic, cage free in my fridge. If money was not an issue that is all I would buy but $4.99 is UNREAL for a dozen eggs. I know, there were no coupons involved but this is still a great find.

Ebates "Big Fat Check"

I received my second "Big Fat Check" from Ebates yesterday! So, it wasn't really a big fat check that is what THEY call it. My check was for a little over $5 but that is $5 that I saved by shopping online and going through the Ebates site before buying anything. If you are going to do some shopping online then head over HERE, set up an account (you automatically get $5 just for signing up), then shop to your heart's content.

Sneaky Kroger Coupons

I got a mailer from Kroger with coupons on it. At first glance I was excited to see the coupons but when I read the "fine" print, I was not so excited anymore. If Kroger is the only store in your area then these will be nice to have but if you have options then you probably won't use them. There are 2~$5 off $45 purchase and 2~$6 off $60 purchase. There is a catch, the wording on the coupon says "With a single purchase of $XX or more after deduction of KrogerPlus savings and manufacturer's coupons" (emphasis mine). So, you have spend $45 or $60 AFTER coupons and KrogerPlus savings not before. Once again, if you only have a Kroger in your area then this will be a blessing for you. If you have options then you will do what I'm going to do, set them aside and probably not use them.

Discounted Photography Class

I get daily updates from a company called Groupon. Groupon goes around major metropolitan areas to get businesses to offer discounts to their email subscribers, like me, but the deal is good only if _____ number of people sign up and pay for the deal. So you only get charged IF the deal reaches the agreed upon number of sales. Once you purchase a deal you have 1 year to use it. It's a coupon for a group of customers!

For example, I just bought a 90 minute point and shoot photography class. The class is offered in Atlanta and you bring your own camera. The class is normally $75 but Groupon struck a deal with the photographer to offer it for $37. That is 51% off the normal price! To me this deal is great because I will bring my own camera and she will help me learn how to use the functions that I would never use because I don't know what they do. The class size is 15 students and it starts at 10:30 am on the days she doesn't have a photo shoot. The agreed upon number that HAD to sell in order for this deal to be good was 100 and it surpassed that at 8:30 am. I get my photography class and a trip to Atlanta! I am hoping to pick up some photography pointers for our trip to Israel.

Target has become one of my favorite stores to visit with my binder of coupons. You never know what will be on clearance so I always take my binder in with me to cash in a deal.

Lately the Target website has had some great printable coupons for Merona products. There are 2 notable coupons on the website right now: $3 off Merona Footwear and $3 off Merona Dress. There is only one print allowed per computer. I printed mine and will head to the clearance rack tomorrow or Tuesday to see if there are any great deals to be had. Awhile back I bought Bubba 3 polo style shirts for $5 each because I had a $3 off Men's Merona shirts coupon. I bought a shirt and a skirt for myself, each for under $5 with Target printable coupons. Deal on All You Magazine

Here it is ladies and gentlemen: the deal on All You Magazine that I was telling you about. If you go HERE you can sign up for 40 issues of All You for $40. That is $1 an issue for a magazine that will pay for itself month after month. There are between $40-65 (sometimes more, sometimes a little less) worth of coupons in each issue that I have seen so far. I haven't seen another magazine that has the number or quality of coupons in it that All You carries. I, in all seriousness, have enjoyed the articles and access to the website. One of my favorite things about All You, besides the coupons, are the REAL women they use as models throughout the magazine. Gotta love a woman with curves!

There are other magazines at the site that might interest you but the All You Magazine deal is what got my attention. I look forward to my All You each month and have 2 subscriptions to it. I might just have to sign up for subscription #3!

Update: Clearance At Publix

I just got home from a great trip to Publix even though I left HALF my coupons at home...can you believe it? I was all out of whack while I was there. I left my Welch's grape juice Qs at home and McCormick spice Qs...I mean, seriously, where was my head?!? I went early in hopes of scooping up some of the Schick Hydro razors and gel since they are restocking today. They only got 2 or 3 razors in and when I left they hadn't even gotten to the shave gel yet.

For the folks that go to the Publix on Russell Parkway in Warner Robins there is a stand where they put clearance items. A lot of times there isn't anything interesting on it but this morning there was. There are Pantene style products priced at 2 for $3.99, it's not free but it's not a bad price either if you use it. I have a $1 off Pantene style products coupon. Also, Pert Plus for Men is on clearance 2 for $3.99 and some of them have the "Try Me Free" sticker on them. AND there is a $1.50 off any Pert Plus 3-in-1 for Men Q...I only have 1 of them so it must be from the AJC. If you get a bottle with the "Try Me Free" sticker on it then you can get a mail in rebate and that makes it free. There is usually a limit of one per household so when you head up to the store keep that in mind. What about your store? Any clearance items worthy of mentioning?

If you shop at CVS and scan your CVS card when you walk in the door you can score free shampoo and conditioner. Today when I scanned my card the magic coupon machine printed a $1 off CVS shampoo or conditioner coupon. CVS has a shampoo and conditioner that is only .99 each! I love this coupon because it means free shampoo and conditioner that I can put in my Cheerful Giver box to give to someone who needs it. Using coupons is not only a blessing for my family but God is able to use it to bless others because we get all this stuff we can give away to those in need!

His Word Wednesday-Late

My life verse is Psalm 130:5. I found it shortly after I became a Christian and He spoke straight to my heart through that verse. At the time I was waiting to see if I would meet and marry a Christian man. It was several years before that question was answered and didn't happen until I was perfectly content with my singleness. In fact, I had mapped out a 10 year plan that had nothing to do with dating or marriage! When I set the plan in motion I met and married my sweet, sweet Bubba. Now, if you are waiting on the Lord to bring a Godly spouse into your life...writing a 10 year plan isn't the "formula" to get a future spouse. :-) The point was that I found contentment where God had me, single and solely His.
I had that verse engraved in my husband's wedding band. Psalm 130:5 "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits and in His Word I put my hope." I waited on the Lord to bring the man He had been preparing just for me into my life. I am SO GLAD I waited!!! I see couples who are miserable with their choice of spouse on a daily basis. I hear the men complaining and the women griping. Now, neither Bubba nor myself are perfect by ANY stretch of the imagination but we are perfect for each other. He is gifted in ways that I am not and vice versa. My husband is a giver with a servant heart with an amazing personality. People are just drawn to him, he makes them feel valid and makes them laugh. It's one of the things I love the most and admire about him. In contrast, I have a "prickly" personality and a "glass half empty" life view. His sunny personality and "happy-go-lucky" atittude is balanced with my daily dose of reality. :-) I promise it works. He makes me laugh and I remind him to take out the trash, take his medicine, and to call his Mom on Mother's Day.
Last week I mentioned a couple of things that we are going through right now. When I thought Psalm 130:5 could be filed away in the back of my heart I find myself turning to His comforting words in that verse again. I wait for the Lord! Aren't we all waiting for something? Perhaps you are waiting for someone to call about a job, or for the doctor to give you a clean bill of health, or for your prodigal child to come home. Maybe you are waiting for a spouse who has turned his/her back on you and the children to come to their senses and come home. For us its the wait for children and reconciliation with family members. Its the wait for our hearts to heal and for God to tell us what direction we need to go in next.
We can't put our hope in our spouses, children, Pastors, parents, teachers, or even ourselves because we are ALL human and make mistakes. Even though my husband loves me with all his heart he still hurts me on a regular basis and I him. Sometimes I hear the words coming out of my mouth and immediately know the damage they will do and yet I can't stop them from coming out! I hate that but it's why I needed a Savior and why I have to have His help every single day. If you are hurting or wandering or waiting you can turn to the ONLY ONE who will never abandon you or forsake you. The One who will forgive and heal you no matter how deep the wounds. I promise that none of you were as far away from God as I was when He whispered my name in the University of Georgia library that October evening. My heart, soul, and life were shattered because of what I had done. There are no fingers to point, no blame to place, I made the choices and I wasn't doing a good job living with them. He was the ONLY ONE who could pull me out of the mud, clean me up, and put me in the Land of the Living. He is why I wake up each morning and get out of bed. He is my strength, my reason for living, He is why I put one foot in front of the other.
If you are in a hurting place then repeat this verse over and over: Psalm 130:5 "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits and in His Word I put my trust." Then find the following song and let it sink into your soul. Ask God to give you the strength to wait on Him but remember not to jump out in front or you will fall on your face. You are loved!
